Molecular genecology is the study of geographical clines in frequencies of molecular markers and their relationship to ecological clines in environmental conditions. This study outlines the principles underlying the selection of populations, focusing on avoiding 'false positives'- noncausal correlations between allele frequency and the environment. The principles are illustrated by identifying a set of populations of Lolium perenne for the study of temperature responses. The selected set of populations encompasses a 20 degrees C range in mean January temperature. Their freezing tolerance shows a linear trend with winter temperature, LT50 decreasing by 0.25 degrees C for each 1 degrees C reduction in mean January temperature.  相似文献

The nest-weaving spider mite Schizotetranychus miscanthi Saito showed a cline in male-to-male aggression intensity with minimum winter temperature. The altered kin structure in spring nests, which might be caused by winter harshness, was hypothesized to be a key factor responsible for the cline in male-to-male aggression. In Japan, we found two forms (high- and low-aggression forms) that showed different clinal trends with similar regression slopes and different intercepts. The former is characteristic of local populations from milder climates, whereas the latter occurs in harsher climates. We hypothesized that the intensity of female diapause, which may determine whether males are produced during late winter, was one of the factors separating these two clinal forms. In the four populations studied, short day length during the developmental period (egg to adult emergence) induced diapause in females. Diapause intensity varied greatly among populations, and particularly between the high-aggression and low-aggression forms. These data, together with data on winter harshness between the localities, led us to believe that female diapause is one of the factors affecting relatedness between interacting males in nests and can explain why the two forms of S.miscanthi have different clinal trends in male aggression in Japan.  相似文献

Understanding the mechanisms underlying species distributions and coexistence is both a priority and a challenge for biodiversity hotspots such as the Neotropics. Here, we highlight that Müllerian mimicry, where defended prey species display similar warning signals, is key to the maintenance of biodiversity in the c. 400 species of the Neotropical butterfly tribe Ithomiini (Nymphalidae: Danainae). We show that mimicry drives large-scale spatial association among phenotypically similar species, providing new empirical evidence for the validity of Müller's model at a macroecological scale. Additionally, we show that mimetic interactions drive the evolutionary convergence of species climatic niche, thereby strengthening the co-occurrence of co-mimetic species. This study provides new insights into the importance of mutualistic interactions in shaping both niche evolution and species assemblages at large spatial scales. Critically, in the context of climate change, our results highlight the vulnerability to extinction cascades of such adaptively assembled communities tied by positive interactions.  相似文献

A challenge

Variation is ubiquitous in nature across all spatial and temporal scales and underlies prominent ecological and evolutionary theories. Although understanding the causes and consequences of trait variation is a central goal of trait-based ecology, the scaling of trait variance across space and time (variance scaling) is unresolved.

A solution

We argue that characterizing trait variance across spatio-temporal scales using a combination of prominent power laws can elucidate the role of environmental variability in trait variation and potential mechanisms driving trait patterns. In particular, the species–time–area relationship and Taylor's power law help to establish a generalizable framework for developing and testing variance scaling theory. Finally, we outline priority research questions and tractable systems for answering them. Successional forests, long-term forest monitoring networks and censuses of short-lived taxa are ideal for coupling high-resolution environmental data with measurements of trait variance across scales to test the models proposed here.

Main conclusions

Characterizing the behaviour of variance across spatio-temporal scales is feasible and a prerequisite for developing a predictive theory of trait-based ecology.  相似文献

根据黄土高原南北样带尺度的人工刺槐林(Robinia pseudoacacia)的年轮宽度资料,分析了该地区刺槐树木生长趋势,以及刺槐年表对气候响应随降雨梯度变化规律。研究结果表明延安以北的刺槐样点(绥德、神木)年轮指数近期趋于下降,树木有生长衰退现象;而延安以南刺槐样点(延安、富县、宜君、永寿)年轮指数近期趋于上升,树木无生长衰退现象。气候响应结果表明,刺槐年表对气候响应均以延安样点最为敏感,表现年表与温度的负相关关系,以及年表与降雨和干旱指数的正相关关系,而延安以北和以南刺槐样点对气候响应敏感性均较低。黄土高原中部延安地区地处森林草原过渡带,刺槐生长对外界环境变化最为敏感,年表中气候信号也较强;延安以南地区地处森林植被带,气候条件较为适宜刺槐林生长,因而年表中气候信号较弱;延安以北地区地处草原植被带,气候条件比较恶劣,刺槐生长对干旱气候已有一定适应性特征,因而年表中气候信号也较弱。  相似文献

Over the past decades, global warming has led to a lengthening of the time window during which temperatures remain favorable for carbon assimilation and tree growth, resulting in a lengthening of the green season. The extent to which forest green seasons have tracked the lengthening of this favorable period under climate warming, however, has not been quantified to date. Here, we used remote sensing data and long-term ground observations of leaf-out and coloration for six dominant species of European trees at 1773 sites, for a total of 6060 species–site combinations, during 1980–2016 and found that actual green season extensions (GS: 3.1 ± 0.1 day decade−1) lag four times behind extensions of the potential thermal season (TS: 12.6 ± 0.1 day decade−1). Similar but less pronounced differences were obtained using satellite-derived vegetation phenology observations, that is, a lengthening of 4.4 ± 0.13 and 7.5 ± 0.13 day decade−1 for GS and TS, respectively. This difference was mainly driven by the larger advance in the onset of the thermal season compared to the actual advance of leaf-out dates (spring mismatch: 7.2 ± 0.1 day decade−1), but to a less extent caused by a phenological mismatch between GS and TS in autumn (2.4 ± 0.1 day decade−1). Our results showed that forest trees do not linearly track the new thermal window extension, indicating more complex interactions between winter and spring temperatures and photoperiod and a justification of demonstrating that using more sophisticated models that include the influence of chilling and photoperiod is needed to accurately predict spring phenological changes under warmer climate. They urge caution if such mechanisms are omitted to predict, for example, how vegetative health and growth, species distribution and crop yields will change in the future.  相似文献

To examine temporal variation in diet, two size classes of western carp gudgeon Hypseleotris klunzingeri were collected from macrophyte habitats in Dugays 2 billabong, a floodplain lake on the River Murray, Victoria, Australia, for 1 year. Fish were collected bimonthly during the day and at night between October 1995 and September 1996. Western carp gudgeon consumed a range of prey, including caddisflies, odonates, shrimps and detritus. The bulk of their diet volume, however, consisted of chironomids and zooplankton. The diets of small and large western carp gudgeon were similar and did not change from day to night. There was, however, high variability across sampling trips in fish diets, both at the community level and among selected prey groups, particularly chironomids, zooplankton and detritus. Community analysis revealed that diets of fish collected from the billabong following stable antecedent water levels were similar and showed little variation, while those collected following fluctuating antecedent water levels showed much more variation. These patterns were mirrored in the volumes of individual diet components.  相似文献

The sensitivity and response of northern hemisphere altitudinal and polar treelines to environmental change are increasingly discussed in terms of climate change, often forgetting that climate is only one aspect of environmental variation. As treeline heterogeneity increases from global to regional and smaller scales, assessment of treeline sensitivity at the landscape and local scales requires a more complex approach than at the global scale. The time scale (short‐, medium‐, long‐term) also plays an important role when considering treeline sensitivity. The sensitivity of the treeline to a changing environment varies among different types of treeline. Treelines controlled mainly by orographic influences are not very susceptible to the effects of warming climates. Greatest sensitivity can be expected in anthropogenic treelines after the cessation of human activity. However, tree invasion into former forested areas above the anthropogenic forest limit is controlled by site conditions, and in particular, by microclimates and soils. Apart from changes in tree physiognomy, the spontaneous advance of young growth of forest‐forming tree species into present treeless areas within the treeline ecotone and beyond the tree limit is considered to be the best indicator of treeline sensitivity to environmental change. The sensitivity of climatic treelines to climate warming varies both in the local and regional topographical conditions. Furthermore, treeline history and its after‐effects also play an important role. The sensitivity of treelines to changes in given factors (e.g. winter snow pack, soil moisture, temperature, evaporation, etc.) may vary among areas with differing climatic characteristics. In general, forest will not advance in a closed front but will follow sites that became more favourable to tree establishment under the changed climatic conditions.  相似文献

Drosophilid flies breeding on ephemeral resource patches (e.g., decaying fruits) are assumed to transfer yeasts to their oviposition sites, presumably in order to positively affect offspring development. We tested this hypothesis with Drosophila subobscura Collin (Diptera: Drosophilidae) by manipulating their nutritional (yeast‐fed vs. non‐yeast‐fed) and reproductive status (mated vs. non‐mated). Flies were then released into vials containing decaying fruits (either sloes, crab apples, or Syrian plums). After a constant residence time in the vials, the flies were removed, 16 first‐instar larvae were transferred to the fruits and their survival probability to the adult stage was recorded. Whereas previous exposure of the larval substrate to yeast‐fed males and virgin females (yeast‐fed and non‐yeast‐fed) had no effect on survivorship, exposure to yeast‐fed and mated females that deposited eggs on the fruits (subsequently removed) led to a significant increase in the survival probability of the transferred larvae to the adult stage. Although the exact mechanism of yeast transmission remains to be determined, we suggest an active inoculation of the breeding substrates with yeast by ovipositing females. In agreement with previous studies, we found a negative effect of mould growth on larval survival, which, however, depended on the fruit type. We discuss various scenarios of yeast involvement in benefits to the insect larvae and suggest that insect–mould interactions should be examined in detail in order to better understand the behavioural and life‐history traits of insects that depend on ephemeral resources.  相似文献

Of the 22 species of Ropalidia occurring in Australia, only R. plebeiana is distributed in temperate areas. This wasp is abundant in the south‐eastern coastal regions of Australia, where it forms huge nest aggregations. Based on our observations in late autumn and early spring, as well as information in the literature, we outline the colony cycle of R. plebeiana in the south‐eastern coastal area of New South Wales. The nesting period lasts for approximately 9.5 months, which is unusually long for temperate polistine wasps. Most foundresses seem to return to their natal nests in early spring (mid‐August to early September) to start their own colonies by reusing pre‐existing nest combs, and the pre‐emergence stage (before the emergence of the first adult brood) lasts for approximately 3.5 months. Reproductives (gynes and males) start to emerge as adults in early March, and the reproductive‐producing period lasts until the end of May. Both the pre‐emergence stage and the reproductive‐producing period are much longer than in other temperate polistine wasps, which is discussed in terms of fluctuating temperature conditions in the area and the formation of nest aggregations, a peculiar habit for temperate populations of R. plebeiana.  相似文献
